BEAUFORT WOMAN’S CLUB HONORS HIGH SCHOOL ART STUDENTS

 

The Beaufort Woman’s Club held its 5th annual High School Art Competition at Purvis Chapel Fellowship Hall on April 16, awarding ribbons and cash prizes to talented students from East Carteret, West Carteret and Croatan High Schools.

 

More than 180 pieces of art were submitted for the competition. The woman’s club honored first-place winners with $75 and second-place winners with $35. The competition added three new awards this year – Best of Show ($75), People’s Choice ($75) and the Mayor’s Award ($35), presented by Beaufort Mayor Rett Newton.

 

“We really appreciate the creativity of the students, and the cooperation of the art teachers, local judges and club members who come together to make this competition a success each spring,” said Jackie Pittman, co-chair of the Beaufort Woman’s Club art committee.

 

First-place winners were Betsy Molina (West) in photography; Meghan Harmon (East) in printmaking; Sierra Daugherty (Croatan) in mixed media; Lexus Sosa (Croatan) in clay; Curren Connor (West) in drawing; and Hailey Faglano (East) in painting.

 

Second-place winners were Kira King Silvia (West) in photography; Lauren Ramos (Croatan) in printmaking; Madeline Honaker (Croatan) in mixed media; Ryan Wheeler (Croatan) in clay; Tierra Benders (East) in drawing; and Phoebe Burick (Croatan) in painting.

 

Betsy Molina (West) received the Best of Show and People’s Choice awards for her photograph “Lost Boy.” Naomi Espiritu (West) received the Mayor’s Award for her painting “The Eyes That Scream My Name.”

 

Judges for the competition were Mark Golitz, potter and gallery owner of BluSail; Jack Saylor, realism painter @jacksaylor.com; Manda Holden, watercolorist, miniatures at instagram/onmytravels_.
